The letter sent on the subject and signed by the president and secretary of PED Crete, Mr. Kourakis and Mr. Malanadrakis, respectively, states the following:

“During the last twenty-four hours, several areas of Crete have been severely affected by intense and extreme weather events, the main characteristic being the large amounts of rain in a short period of time that cause large floods.

Extremely extreme climatic phenomena have caused the destruction, in some cases complete, of important municipal infrastructures (mainly road network and construction of rural roads) while together with a first assessment there is great damage to houses and plant capital – production in many areas De Crete.

The current meteorological phenomena have mobilized both the state mechanism and the municipal services as a whole, the main concern being the protection of human lives but also the effort to partially restore the damages, mainly in the road network, which need a response immediate.

If we take into account that in the recent past our island had faced similar meteorological phenomena and disasters, we realize that the infrastructure has already been “taken” and in many cases the damage of the past has not yet been repaired.

At this time, the Municipalities of Hersonissos (LARGE-SCALE DISASTER), Minoa Pediados, Lassithi Plateau and Amari are facing particular and very serious problems, while as the wave of bad weather advances there is a strong possibility that other Municipalities serious problems are faced and while disasters persist in these Municipalities since the previous bad weather in October.

Mr. Minister,

For all of the above reasons, please:

  1. Immediately declare a State of Civil Protection Emergency to the Municipalities affected by bad weather and have submitted the corresponding request.
  2. provide extraordinary funding to the municipalities of Crete from the Ministry of the Interior for the treatment of immediate problems caused by natural disasters.

In the immediate future, a clear assessment of the damage will be carried out by the competent Services of the Local Authorities.

Due to the urgency of the situation, we request your immediate response. “
