Supermarket sales growth has stabilized at 9% since the beginning of the year, compared to the same period last year, with the second wave of the pandemic and the new lockdown keeping demand high.

According to data released by the research company IRI, in the week ending October 25, there was a 4.2% increase in turnover in organized food retail, reaching 119.99 million euros compared to the week corresponding to 2019 (which ended on 10/27), which was 115.1 million euros.
Market growth this week is largely due to the Attica market, which controls a 53.3% share and “ran” at a 5% rate.
The week ended October 25, according to IRI data, of the 340 categories of products sold within supermarket chains (excluding variable weight products), 168 were food (2% growth in sales), 41 products for the home (9.4% growth in sales in value), 45 personal hygiene products (growth in sales in value 1.6%) and 86 all others (growth in sales in value 19.7%).

Observing the consumption at the points of sale, it is found that Attica, with a participation of 53.3%, registered a sales increase of 5%, the Thessaloniki stores with a participation of 11% showed a growth of 19.1% , while that of Central Greece with a participation of 12.9%. % showed a decrease in sales of 2.6%. Regarding the distribution of consumption by store category, supermarkets (stores of more than 2,500 m2) showed a sales increase of 17.7%, medium-sized ones (2,500 to 1,000 m2) showed a sales increase of 2.7 %, the smallest increase (1,000 m2 to 400 m2) of 1.8% and the mini markets (up to 400 m2) increase sales of 2.6%.
