The diagrams presented to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis due to the risk of “explosion” of coronavirus cases and led to the decision to impose a universal blockade until November 30, brings to light “K”.
As a result, the reproductive number, that is, the Rt index had reached the territory at 1.22. However, in Thessaloniki, mainly, but also in the Attica region, the outlook was clearly more worrying. From the relevant data, it appears to Attica that there has been a sudden launch of the cases since last Monday. While, at the same time, the viral load now spread throughout the Basin, in the municipalities surrounded by Ymittos, Penteli, Parnitha and Monte Egaleo. That is, beyond the center of Athens, there was a “thickening” of cases, in the northern, southern suburbs, with some exceptions, east and west. As is often mentioned, although an exponential increase had not yet occurred in Attica, it was estimated that everything could collapse very soon “if there were confluences”.
The image of the beginning of the week in Thessaloniki was also extremely problematic. The recession that was initially registered ceased to exist and there was a new launch of active cases, 70% of them being under 45 years of age.
At the same time, two more factors leaned in favor of universal confinement: The findings of the contact tracing by place and type of meeting, which was carried out by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection (GSPA). And secondly, the contacts registered by age group of cases. According to the data, the common ceiling is the number one transmission factor of the virus. Thus, if a family member falls ill, it is very likely that another case will occur within the home, so it is necessary to reduce the incidence of total “isolation”.
In addition, the scope of indoor transmission explains the reason for the imposition of the general blockade, with educational and catering institutions being the most “dangerous” points for someone to get sick. Finally, it is observed that according to the findings of the GGP, people of all ages are infected mainly by their peers, although in those over 65 there appears to be an increase in transmission by people aged 40 to 64 , probably, that is, for their children. It is noted that experts have worked out various scenarios for the course of the virus as of now, some of which are extremely concerning.
Based on the above data, the Prime Minister considered that it would be a great risk to wait to see how effective the first measures were. Thus, the scientific committee’s suggestion on Wednesday afternoon for a general shutdown did not surprise Mr. Mitsotakis, who immediately made the decision to adopt it. “As in the first phase we acted on time and before the other countries, today we must do the same. We must act now. If we wait a week or two, we’ll get to the point where other countries have come. “Measures must be taken before the country” blushes “completely and we find that the pressures on the health system are now very great,” the prime minister allegedly stressed to his associates.
The Palace of the Maxims is dominated by the assessment that, like last March, the country is saving time and will avoid strong pressure on the health system. After all, as he admits, the crucial thing is to show resilience in the next two months, as then there is great hope that the coronavirus vaccine will be available.
