Traffic: Panic on the streets of Athens – Reminiscent of … Christmas Eve

The highest traffic of the last two years was recorded yesterday and today in Attica. Specifically, according to data from the Traffic Management Center of the Attica Region, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, traffic on the streets reached its peak. Compared to the previous week, it was 33% higher and 15% higher than last year’s Christmas Eve, where traditionally the heaviest traffic of the year is observed.

“We have congestion on almost the entire road network. Both on the main roads and on the inter-municipal roads.” The routes within the basin from one side to the other can take more than two hours from north to south, “said the head of the Traffic Management Center and Road Safety Consultant for the Attica Region, Kimon Logoti, to the Athens News Agency.

The Center’s system registered congestion even in places where at peak times, under normal conditions, vehicles move with relative comfort. It is about Hamosternas from Piraeus to Syggrou avenue, Konstantinoupoleos avenue and Iera Odos in its entirety.

“Kifissos, we don’t discuss it, everything is congested and the vehicles are almost immobilized. Not only do they move at low speeds, they are the ultimate Confucius traffic. It is the biggest load that the road network has received, at least during the operation of the Traffic Management Center ”, adds Kimon Logothetis.

It is indicative, however, that 44,000 vehicles had passed through the Afidnes and Elefsina tolls until 5:00 pm today, while last Friday 35,800 had passed.

Ermou was “flooded” by people who went out to make the last purchases before the implementation of the new restrictive measures. Social media filled photos of the busy pedestrianized shopping street in Athens.

The Chamber of Commerce of Athens until 15:30 on Friday registered an average increase in turnover of 20% in the stores in the center.

“Most people easily buy comfortable clothes, sweaters, overalls, leggings, pants.” Clothes that can be put inside the house and go for a walk, “says Anna Kotsambasaki, who maintains a clothing store on Lekka Street, to APE-MPE.

“At least let them give it to us on Saturday as well. Today I received 2,000 euros of merchandise. I sell from Instagram and Facebook until I open my online store but it is not the same as the physical store,” he adds.

The president of the Chamber of Commerce of Athens, in statements to APE, clarifies that the images with people in Ermou would not be the same if there were no restriction of visitors based on the square meters of the stores and that the demand does not affect all items.

“After the announcement of the imminent closure, the consumer public turned to retail companies with the sole purpose of meeting specific needs that had not been met until now. We are talking about basic needs ”, emphasized Stavros Kafounis.

Many merchants even have trouble reserving products. “We have a lot of reservations and people don’t come to collect them. Reservations have been made since last month to pick them up when they are paid between the 2nd and the 10th of the month. “They are very rough with the phones when we get them, although they have made progress,” says Eleftheria Kardami, owner of a women’s clothing store in Piraeus.
