The University of Economics suspends all its operations until Friday, after unprecedented attack and expulsion of rector Dimitris Bourantonis. Currently, the Prime Minister is holding a teleconference with the rectors of the country’s universities, with the participation of the Ministers of Education and Citizen Protection.

In particular, in a resolution, the University Senate establishes:

UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC RESOLUTION OF ATHENS

02.11.2020

The Senate of the Athens University of Economics and Business, in a continuous extraordinary meeting since Friday, October 30, 2020, examined in detail the situation that has developed in the Foundation after the events that occurred on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 11:30 in the morning, when a group of about 15 hooded men broke into the office of the Rector of the University in a violent and terrorist manner, threatened him and used unprecedented verbal and physical violence against him, causing serious material damage to the Rectory at the same time.

The Senate decides unanimously

1. Express your deep disgust for these anti-democratic and inhumane acts, which have no place in a free, open and democratic university.

2. To express your full support and encouragement on your face. Rector and to the institution that it represents and affirm that such heinous acts are directed against the entire academic community of the Athens University of Economics and Business.

3. Highlight its determination to act in a coordinated manner in all the actions necessary to effectively deal with any type of illegal conduct that affects the proper functioning of the Foundation and academic freedom.

4. Request the State to proceed immediately with the legislation of specific, effective and applicable measures for the protection of the community (students-three, teaching-research and administrative staff) and the property of the Foundation. The events of October 29 demonstrated in the most emphatic way that the Greek public university is unprotected. In this context, the Senate authorizes the Rector to forward concrete proposals to state bodies to address the aforementioned issues.

5. Discontinue all educational and administrative functions of the Foundation from today Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6, 2020, as the first minimal reaction of your community to this new violent and illegal action that threatens the prestige of the Foundation as a free public, open and democratic. College.

The Senate remains in permanent meeting and evaluates the data.

The Mitsotaki – Rector teleconference is ongoing

Currently, the Rectors of the Universities are holding a Special Session online, at the initiative of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after the attack against Mr. Bourantonis.

The Prime Minister’s initiative was announced by the Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, N. Papaioannou, who informed the other Rector.

In addition to the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos, the Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis also participates in the Summit. The rector will meet again, in an extraordinary session, tomorrow Tuesday afternoon to express his positions on the violence in the universities and, in particular, on the attack against the rector of the Athens University of Economics and Business.

Dramatic measures are expected to be discussed to address the problems of violence and lawlessness in Universities, restoring the stage for card entry, which has been discussed in recent years. The main concern of university students is not to turn universities into centers of anarchy and not to discourage students from attending classes due to the uncontrolled presence of people who tarnish university life. The educational policy priorities include the abolition of university asylum that has already been voted on and the intervention of the Authorities when criminal acts are committed.

The lighting of the university campuses, the more effective control of the laboratories or other facilities of the University are some of the solutions discussed by the Ministry of Education and the university community in the search for a way to safeguard the Universities. The Ministry of Education is preparing a custody plan for the Universities. The issue of the custody of the Universities is of great concern to the direction of the Ministry of Education, which seems to favor the solution of the self-regulation of the Universities. It is aimed at allowing universities to choose how they will proceed.

Universities may, if they prefer, have an entry card system or develop a program with the measures they want to use to guard the space. According to government sources, “Only academics have free access to universities internationally.”

In addition to the plan of shielding the Universities against such destructive actions, the Hellenic Police, which is investigating, has its own plan: those responsible who expelled the rector were “declared” with 100,000 euros.
