Relatives, friends, classmates, but also residents of Samos, said today “the last goodbye” to the small children who so tragically lost their lives in the deadly earthquake last Friday.

Companions and friends came to the temples dressed in white and with flowers in hand, while tragic figures were the parents of the undefeated students.

Shortly before the 17-year-old Aris’s funeral began, the school principal, speaking to reporters, expressed his regret. “For the first time in my life I feel as bad as now,” he said.

“There is no greater irony than what your teachers had to do today, striving for so many years to teach you the richness of the Greek language and how to use it and today we cannot find the words to tell you. Fighting for years to teach you mathematics and today for not finding strength and a way to measure even more than 17.

Fighting for so many years to teach you the secrets of life and today we cannot explain what happened and your life had to end so soon. For so many years we finally failed to learn from you and many, however, while we were trying we learned everything from you.

We learned the smile that you always generously gave us, we learned the pure soul with which every time you approached us and stood next to our friends and us. We learned love and genuine interest in school, and what we didn’t learn from you.

“Just one thing, boy, you couldn’t make us learn, that good souls are not imprisoned in this world, that good souls remain free forever and will always seek seas and skies to conquer,” said a 17-year-old Mars teacher in his funeral.

“Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts,” Mars’s father said as he left the church, and the crowd gathered in applause.
