Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias implemented an emergency plan for Thessaloniki, which is in a state of increased danger due to the rapid increase in coronavirus cases.

According to the plan already implemented, 43 new ICU-COVID beds were secured in order to increase the capacity of the NSS in Thessaloniki.

Where are ICUs added?

More specifically, 8 ICU-COVID beds are added to the General Hospital “Agios Pavlos”, 10 beds to the General Hospital “G. Gennimatas”, 10 beds in PGNTH AHEPA, 4 beds in 424 Military Hospital, 6 beds in GNTH “G. Papanikolaou “and 5 beds at Halkidiki General Hospital.

The Minister of Health will inform the competent heads of the parliamentary parties at noon on Monday, specifically at 2:00 p.m. Then it will go to Thessaloniki.

Nightmare in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is in the eye of the cyclone of the pandemic, as of 2,056 cases announced Saturday by EODY, the 839 are located in the co-capital.

“Things are going badly in Thessaloniki, things are problematic in Athens. The state and health workers must shield the health system, increase ICU beds for COVID, something that has started,” said Professor Charalambos Gogos.

Mr. Gogos clarified that it is possible that we will see an increase in cases in the coming days, since these were noticed with the previous measures in force.

“Unfortunately at the moment there is a big wave, we are in the most difficult phase of the global pandemic, maybe Greece is in a better position than the European average with ten times the number of victims and cases of the main European countries, and so on. “We can see what can happen and here we have the opportunity to see and prevent,” he stressed in statements to SKAI.

Defy measures

Thessaloniki may have hundreds of coronavirus cases, ICUs in city hospitals may be at a tipping point, but this does not seem to discourage some.

In total disobedience to the experts’ instructions on the dangers of the spread of the pandemic, several dozen young people gathered on Saturday night outside Hagia Sophia to drink alcohol with their friends. Mackenzie King Street is known to be a popular alternative entertainment venue in recent years.

Following the complaints to the Hellenic Police operations center, men from Group Z and the crews of two Immediate Action patrol cars arrived on Agias Sofias street in order to disperse the crowded crowd.

The intervention of the Police forced most of the groups to stop entertaining themselves and return home.
