Shocking nurse in Serres – Patient tore me to pieces: “Don’t intubate me, I’m going to breathe better”

The testimony of the nurse Gesthimanis Berberi, who works in the Covid department of the General Hospital of Serres, attributes, at least in part, the harsh conditions and images faced by employees, doctors and nurses in recent days due to the escalation of cases . and the increase in intubated.

Doctors and nurses do not have time to relax, have fun in the bars, nor do they get together for “one last dance” as we have seen many of our fellow citizens in Thessaloniki and Athens do, indifferent to the consequences of their actions towards public health.

Instead, they work tirelessly, often relentlessly, to help the displaced return home and prevent the disease from spreading. But sometimes, like the one described by Gethsemane Berberi, even the strongest curve. Patients, now in the “hands” of science, cling to a nod, a few words from those who care for them to escape danger. As happened with a patient at the General Hospital of Serres, who had to be intubated due to severe shortness of breath.

Then the nurse mentions in the post she made on her Facebook account a few hours ago:

“My name is Gesthimani, I was born in Serres and grew up in the town of Provatas.

My father is named Christos and my mother Eleni.
I have a sister, Areti, and a wonderful niece, María.
I have very good and dear friends, whom I also feel like my family.
I feel the need to introduce myself to let you know that those of us who work in the hospital have not grown up on this planet, nor are we consumable. We have family, friends and we are vulnerable people like all of you. Also, we have not fallen into any magical broth, like Ovelix, so our powers are inexhaustible. I have worked as a nurse for many, many years in difficult departments. I have come across very harsh images all these years, as well as stories of people who have deeply affected me.

During the last months I have been working in one of the covid departments of the General Hospital of Serres and what I have experienced these days is only tragic.
The cruelty and severity of the pandemic and its consequences, it is impossible to convey, through a few lines.

I will only transmit to you, the words of a 49-year-old patient positive for Coronavirus, with very severe shortness of breath, a few hours before being intubated, words that destroyed me …

He sighed and said, “Please don’t get intimate yet, I promise I’ll try to breathe easier.”

Medical confidentiality prohibits the release of patient information, so let me randomly call him Apostolis son, father, and husband, with many good friends who feel like family.
I pray for him tonight, please do the same. “
