The motive for the attack remains unclear, Lyon Mayor Gregory Duchess said. The prosecution has launched an investigation into an assassination attempt. Sources told Figaro that the victim and the perpetrator knew each other and that they had some sort of disagreement in the past.

The priest was shot twice as he closed the church at around 4 p.m. local time. Le Parisien reported that the gunman attacked with a shotgun. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the French authorities about the bloody incident. The attack was condemned by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and Archbishop Ieronymos.
