Journalist Alexis Komninos, my father 17-year-old Aris who along with 15-year-old Claire lost their lives, when the wall of an old building overwhelms them in Samos, described what happened shortly after 1:51 p.m. on Friday, when the Deadly 6.7 Richter earthquake.
“Aris hugged Claire to protect her, but they didn’t react, everything was done in five seconds“The joke fell directly on the children and they had no time to react,” said Mr. Komninos speaking on SKAI’s morning news.
Like he said, he first found the children’s bags with Claire’s father. He claimed that rescuers and firefighters dug with their hands to save the children and thanked Samos Fire Department Chief Giorgos Miaoulis.
“I froze when I saw the EKAB stretchers, I said ‘the game is over’,” he characteristically said.
Referring to abandoned buildings that exist on the island, Komninos said:
“A solution must be found with the abandoned buildings in the memory of our children. There are 30- to 40-year-old abandoned buildings, and the debris that city officials must collect again these buildings will be fraught with dangers. The prime minister saw the point and could not believe what he saw… From this point, and from other adjacent streets in the same situation, Aris and Claire passed to gain time ”.
