The Portuguese government today announced a new lockdown starting on November 4 for most of the country, urging citizens to stay home unless they have to commute to work, school or shopping and urging companies to choose telecommuting.

The partial quarantine in Portugal will affect almost 70% of its population.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa said the measures would cover 121 municipalities, including the Lisbon and Porto regions. The areas affected by the epidemic are home to almost 70% of the Portuguese population of around 10 million.

“The time has come for us to take more restrictive measures to control this pandemic,” said the head of the socialist government at the end of the emergency cabinet that analyzed the health crisis.
