Russia will provide all necessary assistance to Armenia in accordance with the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the two countries, provided that hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh reach Armenian territory, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry confirmed that Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pasinian had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to conduct consultations to determine the type and amount of aid that Russia could provide to Armenia to ensure its safety. “We reaffirm the commitment of the Russian Federation to its obligations as an ally of the Republic of Armenia, including those derived from the 1997 Treaty,” the statement said.

According to the Russian Ministry, some articles of this treaty presuppose specific actions in case of threat of armed attack or aggression against the territories of the two countries. Moscow also reiterated its call to all parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to reach an agreement on an immediate ceasefire, escalation of tensions and a return to peace talks, on the basis of the agreements reached by the the foreign ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia during talks in Moscow on October 10.
