German and British scientists have announced that a new drug, aprotinin, appears to work against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and is therefore worth trying as a candidate antiviral drug in the case of Covid-19 disease. Aprotinin is a proteinase inhibitor.

Researchers from the Institute of Medical Virology of the Goethe-Institut of the University of Frankfurt, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hannover and the University of Kent, led by Professors Martin Michaelis and Jindrich Kinnatl, published aprotinin prevents coronavirus from entering cells and therefore could be a treatment against Covid-19.

Aprotinin has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of coronavirus in various cell types. Aprotinin sprays have already been approved in Russia for the treatment of influenza and can also be easily tested against the new coronavirus.

As Dr. Michaelis said, “Aprotinin aerosol has been reported to be extremely well tolerated in patients with influenza. Therefore, it has a very good chance of preventing the occurrence of severe Covid-19, if administered early after the diagnosis of the disease. “
