Sarigiannis: 15-day lockdown will bring double-digit number of cases by Christmas

A two-week lockdown could lead to a two-digit and four-digit case count by Christmas. This was evaluated by Demosthenes Sarigiannis, Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Speaking to ERT about the danger of a new blockade, as well as the evolution of the pandemic, Sarigiannis emphasized that if we do not implement the simple and basic measures recommended by the experts, then the only way to contain the pandemic will be a second one. emergency shutdown.

According to the professor, “for now until Sunday (11/01/2020) we are looking to see how the pandemic will develop in the country with the new measures, to study the lockdown scenarios”.

“The opening of tourism is catastrophic”

The uncontrolled opening of borders to all foreign tourists who wanted to visit the country is proving disastrous, since the benefit to the economy is minimal and at the same time the coronavirus has spread throughout the country as evidenced by the hundreds of cases reported daily. .

“The influx of tourists has created an increase in the spread of the virus in the community, obviously this alone was not enough to create the problem we are seeing. It needed to be combined with the over-relaxation we show by adhering to measurements. We could do a few different actions to reduce the continuous injections of transmission that come with every wave of tourism, ”says Demosthenes Sarigiannis.

“Last steps and then … crash”

If the latest measures do not work satisfactorily, then until November 15 some kind of lockdown will not be unlikely, says the professor.

“We are trying to find ways that do not affect us financially and psychologically.” A 15-day lockdown appears to be able to lead to a double-digit number of cases by Christmas. “

“If we need to take stronger measures, by Christmas the results will have been seen,” he concludes.
