The “NO” in the Diary of Ioannis Metaxas

It was 3:00 in the morning October 28, 1940, when the Italian ambassador in Athens Emmanuele grazi, rang the bell of the prime minister’s house Ioannis Metaxa in Kifissia, presenting him with the Italian ultimatum. The sequel is known.

However, it is perhaps less well known than Ioannis Metaxas kept Personal diary in which he recorded his thoughts, his concerns, his correspondence, as well as the events of his life. Started writing on this 1896, and with minimal interruptions, it continued until 1941 and a few days before his death (17.1.1941).

The recording of 10/28/1940 in the Metaxas diary is a historical document. He specifically wrote:

“October 28, Monday. At three in the morning I am awakened, Travlos. Grazzi is coming. – War! – Nikoloudi, Mavroudi asked immediately. – I mention King. – I call Palairet and ask England for help. – I’m going down 5 Council of Ministers. All faithful and Mavroudis. – All but Kyros. – King. Procession with him. Unimaginable fanaticism of the people. – Battle on the borders of Epirus. – Bombings. Sirens – We are beginning to settle. God help! !! “

Essentially Metaxas describes succinctly in your journal, the events that followed in the service of the Italian ultimatum and the response “Alors c ‘est la guerre” (hence we have a war) to Grazi.

But who are the people that Ioannis Metaxas mentions in his diary, on that historic day?

The Travlos that wakes him up was the last name of the police chief outside his home.

the Theologian Nikoloudis Y Nikolaos Mavroudis The one who asked to meet even before his telephone conversation with King George, was the Minister of Press and Tourism and the Under Secretary of State respectively.

Palairet, whom he phoned for British military help, was the British ambassador to Athens, Michael Palairet.

Alexis Kyrou was the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
