France – Coronavirus: the government is considering a one-month lockdown

The French government is now considering imposing a month-long lockdown to deal with the rise in coronavirus cases.

In fact, the blanket ban may take effect from midnight on Thursday, French television channel BFM reported today.

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to deliver a televised speech tomorrow night, his office said earlier, as the French leader held a series of meetings to review the situation of the new coronavirus epidemic in France.

The Elysee did not specify whether Macron would announce such a move in his speech. BFM added that the blockade in question would be “more flexible” than the severe traffic restrictions imposed in France in March.

ICUs will reach a saturation record in two weeks without new measures

France has recorded 523 new deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, which is the highest daily report since April 22, according to data from the Health Ministry.

The current death toll includes deaths (288) in hospitals, which are reported daily, as well as 235 deaths in nursing homes in the last four days. Almost 18,000 patients are being treated tonight and about 3,000 patients are intubated.

The Ministry of Health also announced 33,417 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours from 26,711 on Monday and a record 52,010 cases on Sunday. Compared to last Tuesday, when France announced 20,468 new cases, the number of new cases increased by more than 60%.

For the second consecutive day, more than 1,000 patients were admitted to the hospital with Covid-19, after 1,307 on Monday and 148 patients were admitted to intensive care units, compared to 186 yesterday.

The number of COVID-19 patients in France’s intensive care units could reach two weeks at the same level as the first wave in April without further action being taken, government spokesman Gabriel Atal said today.

The spokesperson said the estimates were based on models from the Pasteur Institute. “We are seeing an exponential increase in the number of infections,” he told reporters after a cabinet meeting with party leaders and lawmakers.
