The country has entered the worst phase since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. For the first time cases they broke the 1000 barrier in 24 hours, the number of intubated exceeded one hundred, while the number of deaths is in double digits, almost every day.
At the same time, one after another, the northern regions of Greece are “blushing” on the health security map, as, as the government and infectious disease specialists have repeatedly stressed, this is a dynamic situation that can change anytime.
Indicative of the critical situation is that Sotiris Tsiodras was “recruited” in the update. “It is impossible to control the spread.” I say with a clear conscience that we are not losing hope, “said Sotiris Tsiodras.” The voice of conscience must speak. Things are clearly worse in the second wave. Did we know that? Did we expect it? Yes. It is not just a time of responsibility, it is a time of awareness. It is a choice that we will make, “he said.
After Kozani and Kastoria, which are already at the “red” level, following a meeting of infectious disease specialists, it was decided that two new regions will move to the highest alert level.
Ioannina from Thursday, and specifically from 06:00 in the morning, goes to level 4 of increased alarm, while the same applies to Serres who were also at level 3 and enter level 4.
The situation in Thessaloniki and Larissa is at stake
Now, the focus is on Thessaloniki, where it recorded in the last 24 hours almost all cases found in Attica, with a huge increase compared to Monday (SS 291 on Tuesday vs 84 on Monday). Regarding the basin, the situation – despite the high number of cases – is considered controlled and experts point out that the growth trends of the pandemic are faster outside Attica.
Apart from these regions, the current EODY data is particularly concerning, as a double-digit number of cases are recorded in various regions, and the situation is constantly being evaluated.
In particular, 20 new cases were registered in Evros, in Halkidiki 22, in Rodopi 73, in Pella 20, in Drama 18, in Kavala 12, in Kilkis 11, in Xanthi 15, in Larissa 47, in Trikala 19 and in Chios 61 With some of these areas being at level 2 and others at level 3, this does not mean that they cannot be in “red” at any time.
Serres’s case is a prime example of how quickly the coronavirus can spread to the community and cause an outbreak. The result was that Serres went from the “green” to the “orange” alarm level without the mediation of the “yellow” level, that is, level 3.
The situation continues to be very critical and we must immediately stop the spread of the pandemic, especially in the areas that are in the “red” and “orange” areas, stressed during the official press conference the Vice Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardals.
In this context, he called on all citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to measures, warning that things can go in the wrong direction even in areas that are currently doing better.
Mr. Hardalias made special reference to Thessaloniki and Larissa, where he characterized the situation there as marginal, asking the citizens of these two cities to faithfully implement the measures. “It scares us that in recent days the average age of cases in Thessaloniki has increased from 28 years to 34,” he said.
For his part, Gikas Majorkinis said of Thessaloniki, which has lower temperatures, that the virus lives longer, while small groups of age, fun and movement brought the co-capital to this state.
For the areas close to “red” “in the coming days we will see how the local community will behave there, to avoid the worst.” Local measures, even those related to the inclusion of an area in ‘red’, are not the same than a local lockdown, “said government spokesman Stelios Petsas, referring to the example of retail stores operating in areas like Kozani.
The Thessaloniki ICU was full in a few days
Especially in the co-capital, the situation is dramatic, with the health system now under a lot of pressure, something that worries experts.
As stated by the professor of infectious diseases, Sotiris Tsiodras, “ICUs in Thessaloniki covered 10% a few days ago. Today it has exceeded 50%. “This is an indication that the system is under increasing pressure.”
