Turkey canceled military exercises in the “heart” of the Aegean on October 26, 27 and 28 at noon on Monday.

Then Ankara launched a new Navtex just for tomorrow, October 27, in the same area.

According to the information, Turkey canceled two more, which, however, do not concern the Greek authorities, since they are in areas of its own jurisdiction on its southern Mediterranean coast.

The Stoltenberg moratorium

It is recalled that on Friday, the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, had publicly spoken about a moratorium on exercises during the national holidays of Greece and Turkey (October 28 and 29). Stoltenberg’s proposal was accepted in a conference call between defense ministers.

Stoltenberg spoke of a “very welcome step”, while praising Athens and Ankara for their “flexibility and constructive attitude”.

However, shortly thereafter, Turkey broke the moratorium by announcing exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean (east of Kastellorizo) for both October 27 and 28, provoking strong reactions.
