The number of people who have lost their lives due to Covid-19 in the Czech Republic has doubled in two weeks to 2,047, according to data released today by the Ministry of Health.
After the first case of Covid-19 was recorded, it took the country of 10.7 million people seven months to reach 1,000 deaths.
The number of critically ill patients rose to 772 on Friday, from 438 two weeks ago. A total of 3,314 people are being treated in hospitals with the new coronavirus.
Czech officials acknowledge that the country needs help.
Prague today received the first respirator mission organized by the European Commission, with the reception of 30 machines. Another 120 respirators are on the way, the commission said.
The government also agreed on a plan for the arrival of a 28-member team of medical personnel from the United States National Guard to assist Czech hospitals.
He is also in talks with Germany about the possible deployment of 100 doctors to help their Czech counterparts.
The fight against the new outbreak of the pandemic was hit on Friday, when Prime Minister Andrei Babis proceeded to dismiss the Minister of Health after violating the restrictions adopted by the government to deal with the epidemic. The country’s president has not yet decided the fate of the minister.
The incident could further provoke a lukewarm attitude from many Czechs towards restrictive measures, especially in the use of masks and the observance of social distances.
