Washington issued a stern new warning to Ankara on Friday about the S-400 anti-aircraft system, following reports from the Turkish president that it had indeed been tested at Sinope.
Turkey’s testing of Russia’s weapons system could have dire consequences for Ankara’s relationship with Washington, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Rath Hoffman warned late Friday in a statement.
“The US Department of Defense strongly condemns the test of the S-400 system carried out by Turkey on October 16, a test that was confirmed today by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,” the spokesman said.
“We oppose the testing of this system by Turkey, which could have serious consequences for our security relationship,” the statement added.
“An S-400 operating system is inconsistent with Turkey’s commitments as an ally of the United States and NATO,” Hoffman said.
Erdogan said that “while speaking” in the United States on Friday morning, he would not ask anyone, especially the United States, for permission to test the S-400. “It seems that the gentlemen (in the United States) are particularly upset that this is a weapon that belongs to Russia.” We are determined, we continue on our way as always, “Erdogan was quoted as saying by Reuters and TRT.
