Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a traffic ban from 12:30 pm to 5:00 am in epidemiological surveillance areas “3” and “4” and the mandatory use of a mask throughout his public intervention.
“I have to present the situation with absolute sincerity. Point out the dangers. But also to show the defense path that we must follow.” Based on the advice of science, “said the prime minister in his introductory position, adding:
“In recent days we have seen a sharp increase in cases. To some extent, this is due to the increase in the number of tests performed. Just yesterday, for example, there were more than 24,000 across the country. “But it is clear that in several areas the virus is already spreading at a high rate.”
The data shows that even in this new health crisis, Greece still holds up better than most European countries. (…) But all this is not enough. Like I said, the second wave is tougher. Now it affects all ages, but especially the young. And it permeates regions, cities and even neighborhoods. By vehicle, unfortunately, the social life itself: The daily contacts between us and the simple habits of leisure and entertainment.
The next few months will be difficult
“So I want to be clear: the next few months are going to be difficult. And since a general ‘lockdown’ is not my choice, other measures are required. Smarter. More specific. And finally, more effectively,” he said. the prime minister and specified the following:
“Our plan, however, is dynamic. Which means that it adapts to the outbreak of the pandemic and the local peculiarities that it presents. In the new coronavirus attack, therefore, and following the suggestions of the experts, we respond with two new measurements:
Night traffic ban on levels “3” and “4” and mask everywhere
First, in areas with a dangerous increase in cases, those of levels 3 and 4, traffic will be banned from 12:30 p.m. after midnight until 5:00 a.m. Of course, those who work at night and in emergencies are excluded.
The goal is to reduce travel and evening gatherings, which promote transmission of the virus. With less fun, perhaps, for a while. But with more health for a long time. A prediction that already applies, after all, in many European capitals and regions. And the first report is encouraging.
Second, wearing a mask becomes mandatory everywhere. Not only indoors but also outdoors. Because the coronavirus lurks everywhere, without waiting at the entrance of a store. “He does not eat at the door”, to speak in the language of the little ones “.
Mr. Mitsotakis described the mask as the “vaccine before the vaccine”, noting:
“If two citizens use it correctly and one is infected, the possibility of transmission when they are together is infinitesimal.”
The Prime Minister also announced in advance strengthening controlsfor compliance with existing measures and stricter fines for those who do not comply:
“Store owners who fail to comply, as well as employers who fail to protect their employees, will be punished. And of course, telecommuting will expand further, whenever possible.”
It is observed that at the “orange” level are: Attica, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Lesbos, Samos, Achaia, Zakynthos, Ioannina, Karditsa, Trikala, Pella, Serres, Larissa, Boeotia and specific islands of the Cyclades, while at level 4 They are Kozani and since yesterday Kastoria.
Starting Saturday morning:
“The implementation of the two new measures begins at 6:00 am on Saturday morning,” said the prime minister, who explained the reasons why the measures are being carried out:
“Could we wait? Perhaps, given that the situation here is still comparatively better than in other countries. But from the beginning we decided to exercise caution. And that is becoming even more important now, in light of the Christmas season.”
Appeal to youth
The Prime Minister’s appeal to the younger age groups was special, saying:
“Today’s data is clear: the virus is spreading mainly among young people. And it focuses on the times and places where they gather.
From there, however, he is transferred to the family environment, disproportionately threatening the elderly. That is why I ask the little ones to be careful. And stay away from your parents and grandparents, regardless of whether they have symptoms themselves. An easy adventure for them can prove fatal for their loved ones.
This is not a vague sentiment or a blind complaint, but a well-founded finding. And I approach it with the same sincerity with which I speak with my children. Because, indeed, it is time for our youth to speak up and act.
I know that all the previous months the Greek children have been tired. I understand freshmen who went through a rough winter and want to have fun. As I know, the blood of the students is also boiling. And so it should be.
At this juncture, however, you young people would do well to turn your drive into a responsibility. Be a pioneer in difficult times. Making a consistent lifestyle. And finally, become examples of discipline for the elderly ”.
