The German Foreign Ministry referred to the 1979 International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue in response to a question about a new search and rescue plan presented by Turkey last Saturday. It reiterates Berlin’s position on the resolution of “controversial issues” in the eastern Mediterranean only through dialogue between all parties involved.

According to the announcement of the federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

“The 1979 International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue Services (SAR Convention) states that the areas of responsibility of national maritime rescue services should be determined by the Contracting States concerned by agreement among themselves. This is also true in the eastern Mediterranean The demarcation of rescue zones is completely independent from the demarcation of national maritime borders in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

“We have already stressed many times that a solution to controversial issues in the Eastern Mediterranean can only be achieved through dialogue between all those involved.”
