China’s Disease Control Service announced on Saturday (10/17) that contact with frozen food containers contaminated with a new live coronavirus could cause infections.
This conclusion is drawn when China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) detected and isolated a new live coronavirus in the outer package of frozen cod, in an attempt to determine the source of last week’s outbreak in the city.
This finding, made for the first time, means that it would be possible to transmit the virus over long distances through frozen food.
Two Qingtao dock workers, who were diagnosed asymptomatic in September, brought the virus to a respiratory illness hospital during quarantine in the city due to insufficient disinfection and a lack of protective measures. That led to another 12 hospital-related infections, authorities said last week.

The announcement posted on the CDC’s Chinese website, however, does not include tangible evidence that the two Qingtao workers were infected with the virus on food packaging. They could have been infected elsewhere and in turn transferred the new coronavirus to the packages they touched, said Jin Dong-Yan, a professor of virology at the University of Hong Kong.
The CDC said there had been no case of consumer exposure to frozen foods and the risk was very low. However, he advised employees who handle, process or sell frozen products to avoid direct contact with their skin in case they become infected. Workers should not touch their mouth or nose without washing their hands before removing contaminated work clothes and should also be tested regularly.
Prior to the CDC discovery, genetic traces of the virus had been found in frozen food samples and packaging, but the amount of the virus was very small and no live viruses were isolated, the agency said. “Only live viruses can infect humans,” said Professor Jin.
