The Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, went to Kozani this morning (10/17), since the entire Regional Unit has been transferred since yesterday to Level 4 Increased Risk in the Health and Safety Charter of the Greek Government.

The Undersecretary expressed concern about the epidemiological picture presented by Kozani, as well as cities such as Kastoria, Thessaloniki and Ioannina, immediately after the meeting held in the Western Macedonia Region with the Regional Governor, mayors and representatives of the region. .

“This is where the big problem started in the first phase, this is where the second phase begins,” said Mr. Hardalias, coming out of a wide-ranging meeting.

Mr. Hardalias ruled out for the moment the possibility of imposing restrictive measures, highlighting that “such decisions are made through procedures that examine indicators that are multifactorial.”

He noted that “the situation is critical for the entire country” and called on citizens in the coming days “to strictly and reverently follow the measures recommended by epidemiologists.”

He said there may be fatigue but stressed that “in no case should we let the efforts we have made go to waste.” He stressed that “the Greek people have shown that in difficult situations they have reflexes” and said with optimism that “we will all be victorious in this battle.

He described the situation in Kozani as “critical” and stressed that all residents must “observe with discipline and respect the measures proposed by epidemiologists” and that the use of a mask, distances and personal hygiene must be a high priority. . Mr. Hardalias stressed that the first wave of last March started from Kozani and “from the same area we find that the second phase of the pandemic begins.” He expressed optimism that “West Macedonia, having won the battle in a shock last spring, will achieve the exact same thing today with the confrontation of the second wave.” He asked the public, regardless of intensity, irritation or fatigue, strictly observe the measures to bring the area back to level 3.

Regarding the operation of the school units, he stated that the 20 cases that had been identified since October 1 are not related to endoscopic influx, he explained that “the schools will continue to function normally” and that “if there is an intra-school confusion, we will for fact “. Responding indirectly to the letter of the four mayors of Kozani prefecture requesting the rotation of schools or teaching via videoconference, Nikos Hardalias stressed that “there are different views on the functioning of schools but also those of epidemiologists that we take into account.” However, he noted that in schools it is easier for children to apply precautionary measures than to be in squares or in other places.

Finally, responding to a question about the protests of the mayor of Kozani for the cooperation with Civil Protection, he affirmed that his cooperation with the mayor is good, everything that had to be done for the region has been done by EODY and added: “as a former government local I have a different comfort of communication with the mayors of the area ”.

Nikos Hardalias arrived in Kozani by Civil Protection helicopter accompanied by the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou, while after the end of his meeting with the Kozani bodies and the Regional Governor he left for Ioannina.

Then, he went to Ioannina where he will have a meeting with the Regional Governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kachrimanis, since the Regional Unit of Ioannina also shows a high epidemiological burden (level 3 of Higher Surveillance).
