«Joint grades»From the programs of different departments in Universities promotes the Ministry of Education. One of the basic characteristics of the new Higher Education law, as revealed to prototohema.gr by the Deputy Minister of Education Vassilis Digalakis, is that the University Department will no longer be limited to a study plan as is the case today, but as it is done in postgraduate programs, it will be possible to create departments with a study plan that will include courses in other departments, either from the same university or from other departments.
Therefore, candidates for the Panhellenic Examinations will have the opportunity in the coming years to complete the schools in the Computing Bulletin, starting from a predetermined list that will lead to a double degree. In other words, a model is sought from which students, once they have completed their studies, can have a degree in two specialties, “in the context of the interdisciplinarity that exists”, as is the plan of the Ministry of Education.
As explained by Mr. Digalakis, Deputy Minister in charge of Higher Education, the Universities that have autonomy will compile a new list of faculties that will lead to a double degree, after the successful completion of their studies.
“Universities will offer combinations of departments, of similar faculties, for example Law and Civil Law, which will lead to a double degree, not in four years but in six.”
The departments proposed by the Universities will be evaluated by National Authority for Higher Education and the Ministry of Education will give a “green light” to create a predetermined list of faculties among which the candidates to the Universities will choose the faculties that will lead them to two degrees, the so-called (double degree).
In the discussions that are already taking place in the Universities, the main “trunk” for the construction of double degrees is the labor market and the possibilities that the graduate who has a double degree will acquire. The undersecretary clarifies that the plan does not refer to the creation of new departments, but to programs that will arise interdepartmentally, by two university departments.
According to the discussions that take place without having yet reached a conclusion, the student who wishes to do so also indicates the second department in which he wishes to study, which usually moves between similar faculties, since they are identified in a relevant list. Students attend the course corresponding to the department of the school they have chosen and will be examined in them, at the same time that they have the opportunity to choose a second direction, provided that it is scientifically related to the initial department of admission, in order to be examined. and in a second year, obtaining at the end the double degree if they successfully pass all the courses that the university will determine.
A key element of the new higher education law is that it will allow one department to provide more curricula in collaboration with other departments or even departments from other universities. According to Mr. Digalakitis, the University departments will be able to organize departments with a curriculum that will include courses from other departments and programs of the same or another University.
As an example and in fact current, the Undersecretary brought the collaboration of the Department of Mathematics with the Department of Biology or Medicine that would lead to a degree in which the holder will have knowledge of a mathematical model of epidemiology. In addition, Mr. Digalakis says that it would be possible for the Department of Sociology to cooperate with the Department of Informatics, leading to the degree holder having data analysis capabilities.
The combination of the Humanities with Informatics, as predicted by the academics, can lead to the knowledge of methods and the creation of skills very important for the advancement of many sciences. University students look with a “good eye” at the development of joint programs, from different faculties, considering that in this way their graduates will have more and more specialized programs in the labor market while opening possibilities for cooperation that promote extroversion in the Universities.
Establishment of an import base
The new “panorama” in the Universities that the Ministry of Education intends to create with the new framework law on Higher Education that is being prepared and is expected to be published soon specializes, according to information determined by the HEIs of the number of students admitted to the Universities.
The process of sending letters from the Universities to the Ministry of Education had already started last year, letters with the number of students who can study, however due to a pandemic the process was stopped. Likewise, the Universities will set a ceiling on the score of first-year students in courses of greater importance.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also touched on establishing a base for admission to universities during his recent speech at TIF. According to the same information, the same law is expected to define a dual system of university administration by the Senate and the Personality Councils.
Starting next year, the “landscape” in financing universities will change. This year the allocation of funds to the Universities was based on objective criteria, while as of next year the plan of the Ministry of Education is that 80% of the regular subsidy is awarded based on the criteria (number of students and teachers ) and the remaining 20% based on research activity, extroversion and other indicators that will be chosen to be evaluated by the National Authority for Higher Education.
This year, however, for the calculation of the total distribution index of each IES, each criterion is taken into account with a weighting factor, while the total distribution index of each IES is calculated as a percentage of the total amount to be distributed to Institutions, based on specific mathematics. type.
