One of the hot topics on the EU Summit agenda today and tomorrow in Brussels is Brexit, which has even led to an unprecedented security measure.
In particular, the leaders of the 27 member states were asked to hand over mobile phones and tablets before entering the room for fear of leaks and apparently so that MI6, the British secret service, could not “hear” their discussions.
The EU-UK trade relationship is at stake, but in the end Brexit is passed on to French fishermen.
According to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the European Union wants to reach a trade agreement with the United Kingdom, but it also needs to protect the single market from cheap and substandard products. But France is ready for Brexit without a deal, if Britain refuses to agree on the terms of a future deal that would guarantee the rights of French fishermen in British waters and lay down rules against unfair competition, the French president warned.
“Under no circumstances will French fishermen sacrifice themselves for Brexit,” Emanuel Macron told reporters while attending the summit.
“The leaders of the European Union want a fair deal with the United Kingdom in its future relations with the European bloc, but not at any cost,” warned German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
