The defendant in the murder of American biologist Susan Iton in the summer of 2019 in Crete was found guilty of all charges against him.
The court of seven members, three judges and four members of the jury of the Mixed Court of Juries of Rethymno, faced with the evidence and testimony of witnesses during the hearing, sentenced the 28-year-old defendant late this afternoon: “life imprisonment for the murder 13 years for the rape and 4 months for the possession of weapons “.
The defendant was not granted relief. The convict will be taken back to Tripoli prisons to serve his sentence.
Earlier in his speech, the headquarters prosecutor suggested that Haniotis, 28, be convicted of two crimes and one misdemeanor.
“She was aware of what was going on and put it in the trunk. He was not in a state of consciousness when the act was performed. “There is no reduced charge and we propose the guilt of the accused for the two crimes and the offense,” concluded the prosecutor’s speech.
The American biologist was killed while in Chania, where she participated in a scientific conference. The woman’s body was found in the gallery of a German WWII shelter, meaning the 28-year-old perpetrator had hidden her there after the murder. Following the author’s own suggestion, the police located the point seven meters underground.
Following the trial, attorneys for Susan Eaton’s family, Vasso Pantazi and Georgios Tzeriz, reported that justice had been served.
The trial for the heinous murder of the American biologist began early in the morning with the victim’s sister and husband and the accused’s mother and wife present. In her testimony, her sister Susan Eaton said that the last day she spoke with her sister was 5-6 days before she disappeared as they planned to take a trip together in the immediate future.
“He was a wonderful man. He loved his family and was an exceptional scientist. She had her own laboratory for 20 years.” Her husband and two children have collapsed, while her husband cannot even work. ”
