The United States is reacting strongly to the new Turkish provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean, with the illegal Navtex and the Oruts Reyes seismic uprisings on the Greek continental shelf.
State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortega emphasized that Washington disapproves of new Turkish investigation activities in areas under whose jurisdiction Greece claims.
It highlights that the Turkish actions are unilaterally increasing tensions in the region and deliberately complicating the resumption of critical exploratory talks between Greece and Turkey’s NATO partners.
Coercion, threats of intimidation and military activity do not lead to a resolution of tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, the statement said.
“We call on Turkey to stop its deliberate provocations and immediately initiate exploratory contacts with Greece.” Unwanted actions cannot build trust and there may be a long-term solution, “the State Department said.
