His own personal battle against the coronavirus is given by an infectious disease specialist who was infected with the deadly virus at Nice General Hospital. He is now being treated in the same room where he fought to save the lives of his patients, while his wife tested positive for the virus last Saturday.
As you will hear MEGA tell you, it all started when one Sunday on duty, protocol was mistakenly violated, causing the spread of infections within the hospital.
“It is anxiety, fear, you say where I am going, how I will develop, what will you leave behind if you are helpless or find yourself in a unit. You despair because you see that the disease is prolonged, it destroys you little by little, it takes you back to many things and the third is the feeling of loneliness. “In a secluded place, no one can see you talking only on the phone, the other is isolated somewhere else and this isolation only brings disappointment,” he tells MEGA’s camera.
This is Elias Skopelitis, 49, father of an 8-year-old girl. He fought to save lives at the Nice Hospital Covid clinic. Now he is fighting his own battle.
He was diagnosed with coronavirus on September 26 and since last Thursday he has been hospitalized in the room where he was monitoring patients with the deadly virus.
“From the seventh to the eighth day I started to improve a little in the sense that the fever went down with the corticosteroids that have been inserted. But between the eleventh and twelfth day I began to feel discomfort. “I saw that something was wrong and I felt very cut with the new fever that did not go below the cortisone and I was forced to come to the hospital,” he explains.
During his quarantine at home, he took all precautions. But last Saturday, his wife also tested positive for the virus.
“I was trapped in the hospital and I was not the only one trapped, another colleague and the head of the department had gotten stuck before me and I was followed by four other nurses who were trapped here,” he emphasizes.
For the fifteenth day, Elias Skopelitis fights alone with the virus. The same fight is also given by his wife alone. Her great fear is the echo and stigma that the disease will leave in her eight-year-old daughter’s school environment.
“In the neighborhood, the girl, when we return there are already complaints in the school, the classmates knew that her father works in a Covid clinic and will bring us the coronavirus inside the school. “There have been some reports of this type. Now imagine that you have brought to the truth what you need to hear,” he says.
“We don’t want applause, we want doctors”
The great fear of health workers became a reality for infectious disease specialist Elias Skopelitis.
“For us health workers it is not only that we will get sick, it is the consequences on the family and the environment and one thing we need is not money and thanks to you and the cadres, we want people to come and work in the system to serve now in need not on paper “
Since the first of September, the Covid clinic operates in the Nice hospital, but without, as Elias Skopelitis says, the appropriate infrastructure exists.
“We had made a very good distinction at the beginning of the positive and the non-positive, but this was violated one Sunday. We came on duty and found eight positive people in the area who shouldn’t be positive. From then on, there was this great spread of infections. “
Elias Skopelitis, from the hospital where he is being treated, tries to manage the unprecedented situation that seems like a bad nightmare, always emphasizing the need to strengthen the health system with personnel.
