A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred early in the morning off Crete.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the earthquake occurred at 03:30 in the morning on Monday and had its epicenter 49 kilometers northeast of Sitia. The epicenter was reported under the Cretan Sea, between Crete and Karpathos.
Strong aftershocks, a 4.4 Richter
The next 40 minutes were followed by several aftershocks. The first was 3.2 Richter (at 03:41), the second, which was also the strongest, 4.4 Richter (03:44 with a focal depth of 27 km) and another 3.1 Richter at 03:56.
Subsequently, there were three more aftershocks of magnitude 3.4 (04:10), 4.1 (04:11) and 3.5 (04:35) Richter, with strong seismic activity in the area during the night.
The tremors were felt in much of the island and worried the inhabitants. According to ekriti.gr, the earthquake was felt in Ierapetra, Sitia, Makry Gialos, Mochlos, Kritsa, Hersonissos and other places. There are currently no reports of damage or other problems.
