The condemnation of Golden Dawn as a criminal organization by the Greek Justice makes October 7, 2020 a historic day and is a ray of optimism for the final isolation of these horrible ideas from the body of Greek society. It was preceded by the extremely positive decision of the Greek people to remove him from Parliament in the July 2019 elections.
It is an opportunity, then, to recall six indisputable historical facts.
one. The persecution of Golden Dawn began with a decision by the then Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, to refer him to Justice as a single body for all his violent actions and to request an investigation into the possibility of being a criminal gang. This was followed by the decision of the then Supreme Court prosecutor, Ms. Kotzamanis, but also the Court of Appeals prosecutor, Mr. Isidoros Dogiakos, who referred the Golden Dawn to a trial with that harsh accusation and imprisoned his top political leaders, again under government.
two. After Mr. Tsipras came to power and left for the first time, Golden Dawn’s trial was delayed for about 2.5 years, because they couldn’t find a space to judge … Result? The 18 months of preventive detention have passed and, due to this oligarchy of the Tsipras government, all its key executives should be released.
3. During the first left-wing government, it was proposed to change the electoral law for a more proportionate one, with a reduction to 2% of the threshold for entering Parliament. The 200 seats were not filled then so that the law would be in force from the next elections, thanks to the decision of Ms. Gennimata and KINAL not to vote for her, despite the additional seats they obtained. However, I remember the famous statement by the then Speaker of Parliament, Mr Voutsis, that “if Golden Dawn votes in favor of changing the electoral law, we cannot accept your votes because they are legal.” If, therefore, the 200 votes had been completed, the July 2019 elections would have been held with the specific electoral law of Mr. Tsipras and today Golden Dawn would have 9 deputies in the Greek Parliament. It has no parliamentary representation today precisely because New Democracy and KINAL did not vote then for Mr. Tsipras’ proposal.
Four. Shortly before Tsipras left power, the Penal Code was amended. In the new one, there are significantly reduced sentences for the crimes Golden Dawn was convicted of. The 20-year sentence has been reduced to 15 and mitigation increased. Therefore, the sentences in the Golden Dawn trial will certainly be less than they would have been if the Tsipras government had not changed the Penal Code.
5. In the midst of these events, we did not have a formal but stable SYRIZA – Golden Dawn parliamentary cooperation on all crucial votes, except in the case of electoral law. I remind you of the election of Ms. Thanou to the enviable post of Chair of the Competition Commission with the votes of Golden Dawn.
I also remind you that in the Commission of Inquiry for Health, the Golden Dawn through Mr. Elias Kasidiaris was the only party, except SYRIZA, who had adopted all the accusations against Mr. Polakis (a relevant video that I posted on Wednesday past) on social media). Therefore, also in my case, the SYRIZA-Golden Dawn parliamentary cooperation was absolutely noble and close.
6. The Golden Dawn trial was completed again during the New Democracy rule, this time with Kyriakos Mitsotakis as Prime Minister.
So goes this hypocrisy of Mr. Tsipras, who after the unholy SYRIZA – Golden Dawn alliance all these years, suddenly … woke up and remembered his judgment. In this case, history was written by the governments of New Democracy, first Antonis Samaras and second Kyriakos Mitsotakis. And that cannot be argued.
