The UN Security Council expresses its deep concern over Turkey’s opening of Varosia and calls for the decision to be reversed.

In a statement by all members read by Russian President Vassily Nebenzia in the Council, the House reaffirmed Resolutions 550 and 789 on the status of Varos, expressed deep concern over Ankara’s announcement of the opening of the coastline at Varos and calls for their withdrawal, on the one hand, and to avoid unilateral actions that could increase tensions on the island.

In a statement, the president of the Security Council, Vassily Nebenzia, called for the UN resolutions to be reaffirmed and stressed that measures should not be taken against Varosha that does not comply with them.

Furthermore, it called on the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, as well as the guarantor forces, to initiate a dialogue after the “elections” of the occupiers.

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN and Greek Cypriot negotiator for the Cyprus question Andreas Mavrogiannis immediately expressed his satisfaction with the content of the statement, according to the Cypriot website philenews.com.

The declaration

The following is the statement of the President of the Security Council:

“The Security Council reaffirms the status of Famagusta as defined in previous United Nations Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 550 (1984) and Resolution 789 (1992).

The Security Council reiterated that no action should be taken against Varosha that does not comply with these decisions.

The Security Council expresses its deep concern over Ankara’s announcement on 6 October of the opening of the Varos coast.

In addition, it calls for the withdrawal of this action and to avoid any unilateral action that could increase tensions on the island.

The Security Council reaffirms its commitment to a lasting, comprehensive and just settlement in accordance with the wishes of the Cypriot people, based on a bicommunal and bizone federation with political equality, as set out in the relevant Security Council resolutions.

In this context, the Security Council urges the Cypriot parties and the Guarantee Forces to engage in a constructive and urgent dialogue after the “electoral” process in the Turkish Cypriot community.

The Security Council reiterated its support for the Secretary General and its intention to convene a meeting as agreed between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders in their meeting with the Secretary General in November 2019.

“The Security Council remains committed to the issue.”
