Olympiacos took the first derby of the year, beating Panathinaikos OPAP in OAKA (71-78). The rojiblancos were superior for almost the full forty minutes, saw Giorgos Printezis scraping the green defense at the low post and emerged victorious from the eternal rival’s seat.

The Olympiakos vice-captain hit the opponent’s defense again and again in the first and third periods, forcing Giorgos Vovoras to change his face and form to stop him. The greens disappointed from the periphery, but they fought to the end with Ioannis Papapetrou going to great lengths to … fill gaps, both in creation and execution. But it was not enough, especially since Nemanja Nedovic was bad.

The MVP
George Printezis was excellent at 20’50 ” on the court. George Bartzokas essentially gave him time to participate in the first and third periods, and fully justified it. The vice-captain of the rojiblancos squandered the defense of Panathinaikos OPAP near the basket, to end the game with 17 points (with 6/7 two points, 1/2 three points and 2/2 shots), 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 error in 20’05 ” of participation.
THE WEAK LINK
George Vovoras didn’t get what he wanted from Nemanja Nedovic, especially down the stretch of the match. The 29-year-old guard scored five points in the middle of the third period, gave a little extra boost to the club, but at the most critical point it turned out to be trivial, making wrong decisions and throwing bad shots. On a statistical level, he finished with 9 points (with 3/7 two points, 1/6 three points), 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 3 errors in 26’53 ” of participation.
THE STATISTICS THAT stood out
Both teams were very unlucky in peripheral shooting. Panathinaikos OPAP had 6/27 three points and Olympiakos 5/27 three points (11/54 in total), a sign of the lack of competitive rhythm of both teams after seven months of inactivity.
For clover, another element that demonstrates the lack of creation was the single digit number in the final passes (9), with Ioannis Papapetrou giving almost half. Not that Olympiacos were much better (12), but they were not as one-dimensional in passing.
THE RACE
After three minutes without a point (with 0/10 shots and 1 error), Olympiakos slowly began to step on the accelerator. The rojiblancos got points collected from the highs on the racket, reaching +10 very quickly (7-17 in 8 ‘) in OAKA. Giorgos Vovoras was furious with the behavior of his tall players, he changed many things in faces and forms to find a functional five on both sides of the court, but as long as his players were out of place, the difference could not be noticed.
The +10 (12-22) of the first period showed the rojiblanca superiority at a time when the club was getting points almost exclusively from offensive rebounds and transition.
Despite Costas Sloukas’ injury, Olympiacos did not lose their rhythm and control of the situation in the second ten minutes. Vassilis Spanoulis was now the one who did the most pick and roll, and Sasha Vezenkov was the one who finished the entry and exit phases of the racket. Vassilis Spanoulis and Charles Jenkins scored in personal phases to make the difference to +15 (18-33 in 14 ‘) for Olympiakos, who were improving their statistics minute by minute.
No matter how much George Vovoras shuffled the deck (we saw teams with Ioannis Papapetrou at “2” and only one ring in the top five, and others with the leader of the greens at “4” and Aaron White at “5”), the essence I do not change. At least not greatly. The ball circulated exemplary in the attack of Olympiakos, which took points from the nine out of ten that it played in the first half (only Costas Papanikolaou was absent with 0/3 shots, with Vassilis Charalambopoulos and Giannoulis Larentzakis without getting up from the bench) and some way their lead remained at +15 (29-44) with about two minutes to go.
However, two green triples collected, by Aaron White and Leonidas Kaselaki, reduced the difference to the single digits (35-44), giving new interest to the game heading into the second half.
The third ten minutes had strong transitions in the performance of both teams. Panathinaikos OPAP managed to close the gap to -6 (40-46 in 22 ‘) thanks to a triple by Marcus Foster, but the red-and-white reaction came very quickly. Giorgos Printezis hit balls collected at the low post, it was impressive and was the main reason why Olympiakos ‘lead rose again to +14 (54-68 in 25’).
However, despite the return of Costas Sloukas to the court, the guests did not receive much from their main creator.
On the other hand, Ioannis Papapetrou’s personal phases were those that kept the clover upright from that point until the end of the third period. The Panathinaikos OPAP captain finished the phases one by one, created for the others and was the reason why the greens reached the point of feeling that they could get the victory (57-62 in 30 ‘).
In the final stretch of the match, Olympiakos made some mistakes that gave Panathinaikos OPAP rights to hope, which, however, were not fatal. Sakil McKissick made big baskets, Nemanja Nedovic (despite the small explosion of five consecutive points) was fatal in the last two minutes, so the game never … returned.
The rojiblancos stayed in the lead until the final, scoring as many shots as was necessary to not lose the game by hands and made a save (71-78) for this year in the Euroleague, against a team that wanted a lot, but it showed in some places. How could I not?
