Information from the Ministry of Health on the coronavirus is ongoing, with the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalia and the Adjunct Professor of the EKPA School of Medicine and member of the Expert Committee of the Ministry of Health, Gika Majorkinis.
The Minister of Digital Government will participate in today’s information session Kyriakos Pierrakakisand the Undersecretariat of Health Vassilis Kontozamanis, to answer questions related to the health system.
Watch live information from the Ministry of Health on the coronavirus
Speaking first, Gikas Majorkinis reiterated that in the last 24 hours in Greece 391 cases were diagnosed, 56 of which are related to known influxes and 36 were located at the entrance gates.
Of these, 161 cases of coronavirus were detected in Attica, while 25 new infections were recorded in Thessaloniki. The number of intubated patients appears to be rising to 98, boosting the health system, as the professor said, as it is very close to 100 severe coronavirus patients.
Majorkinis noted that to date, 37 million coronavirus diagnoses have been made, and around 8 million of them are active patients. As you said, from positives to the virus, some are expected to become seriously ill and 5,000 to 6,000 will end in the next 24 hours.
Europe faces aggressive increase in coronavirus cases
The professor referred to the second wave of the coronavirus in Europe, which shows an aggressive increase in cases in several countries. As he said, measures are being taken in large cities to curb the aggressive growth observed in recent days.
Majorkinis also cited the example of Ireland, which has seen 100 out of 10 coronavirus cases in recent days. This, he said, shows the virus’s ability to bounce back even in countries that are extremely isolated. Finally, he pointed out that in Spain and Denmark there is a small and constant decrease in coronavirus cases.
Stabilization in Attica, growing trends in other areas
Referring to our country, Mr. Majorkinis pointed out that the number of deaths from coronavirus has a tendency to stabilize the average daily deaths between 5 and 6. Signs of stabilization can be seen in the new cases registered in Attica, but this evolution is you will see. more clearly next week.
However, the professor noted that there are increasing trends in coronavirus cases outside of Attica. Mr. Majorkinis once again called for compliance with hygiene and distance rules, especially by professionals, as he stressed that the epidemic may enter an aggressive phase that we already see in other countries.
Monoclonal antibody treatment for coronavirus is very promising
Finally, Gikas Majorkinis again referred to monoclonal antibody treatment – as received by Donald Trump – that seems to produce promising results in patients in the early stages of Covid-19.
He cited rabies as an example of the effectiveness of such treatment protocols, which, as he said, without treatment has 100% mortality. In people who have been exposed to rabies after a bite, he said, when antibodies are given early, the chance of mortality drops to zero.
The EKPA professor pointed out that this treatment will not be available immediately, but it is a positive example of the long road ahead of us in dealing with the new coronavirus.
Pierrakakis: “The map fills the gap that existed in information at the local level”
Digital Government Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, speaking after Nikos Hardalias, referred to the Civil Protection plan for the map that now exists for all the Regions of Greece. “Citizens have another tool at their disposal. What does it offer? We found that there is a gap in direct access to information at the local level. All the measures that are applied and displayed on the map are now gathered there.
These measurements are specified on the map. There are 4 levels of readiness in green, yellow, orange and red. The latter refers to a higher risk level. Each level indicates what is allowed and what is prohibited in specific areas. If deemed appropriate, it can be done on a smaller scale in the future.
Citizens can easily find what they want on the map. We reiterate that we are open to proposals submitted by citizens. Working together we can have better results for everyone. “Tools like these do not replace responsibility, but they help us to be vigilant.”
