Wednesday, October 8, 2020. A large crowd has flooded most of Alexandra Avenue, waiting to hear the verdict in the multi-year trial of the Golden Dawn Nazi formation.
Seconds after the announcement of the verdict, the aura of the police threw water at the assembled people, without anything having happened before.
Both GADA and the Minister of Civil Protection speak of an attack by 600 people “with 150 Molotov cocktails, stones and other objects” at the intersection of Loukareos and Alexandras streets, which provoked a reaction from the police. But is that the case?
The video by Manos Fraggioudakis and News 24/7 is an indisputable witness to the events, which differ from the ELAS announcement.
The aura of the police is recorded shooting water at the assembled people, without having fired Molotov cocktails at the expense of the police forces, as reported by GADA and Michalis Chrysochoidis.
But let’s review the ELAS claims one by one, to see what really happened after the announcement of the decision and how the limited episodes began.
What ELAS reports
“At 11:55, about 10 minutes after the announcement of the decision of the Athens Court of Appeals, and while the large crowd (at least 20,000 people) dispersed, the police forces attacked with Molotov cocktails, stones and other objects of about 600 people, at the junction of “Loukareos and L. Alexandras”, states an announcement issued by ELAS on Wednesday and continues:
“The objective of the attack was the destruction of the police vehicles, which blocked access to the Court of Appeal. 10 police vehicles were damaged.
The police used pressurized water pumps to repel the attack. As there was no withdrawal of the attackers, chemicals were used to dismantle them. At the same time, water continued to be poured to reduce the effects of chemicals on the gathering crowd that was leaving.
More than 150 Molotov cocktails were fired at police, mainly during the chase on Alexandra Avenue.
“The police forces made two arrests.”
What the documents show
The videos and photos of the place clearly refute the accusations of ELAS and Michalis Chrysochoidis in the following points:
- It was 40 seconds after the announcement of the decision – No 10 minutes
- Nowhere does it appear that the concentration has dissolved or that this happens immediately.
- Neither the News24 / 7 video, nor the plethora of others circulating on the internet, show that at least one (probably 150, as the minister says) Molotov cocktail was fired at the police before water cannons were fired at the protesters. concentrated.
- No document (video or photo) shows the number “600” of people who clashed with the police forces.
The fact that the GADA announcements and the statements of the Minister of Civil Protection about the events that followed the announcement of the decision do not reflect reality, can be seen in a video taken directly in front of the police buses.
Some empty water bottles are shot at the police, not “Molotov cocktails, rocks and other objects”.
ELAS, to back up its claims, published photos that, however, reinforce the position that the initial launch of the water and then the chemicals against the world was not provoked at all.
The photos, according to the police, record the attacks on the police officers that led to the dispersal of the rally.
However, it seems that the assembled people have abandoned the crossing of Alexandra and Loukareos, something that, as shown in all the videos, did not happen before the use of the aquifers against them.
The video by photographer Nikos Christofakis shows the number of people turning against police buses, and it is clear that it is not 600, probably not even 20.
On a day marked by the great victory of the Republic against fascism, ELAS and its political leadership chose to display a highly undemocratic attitude.
Thus, the questions that arise are clear. Why did ELAS decide to disperse the majestic and peaceful anti-fascist meeting? Was it considered that using aura and then chemicals against such a large crowd, with people of all ages, would not put them at greater risk than a few empty police plastic bottles? Why does the Minister of Civil Protection choose to cover ELAS executives, lying, in fact, so obviously?
The work of Mr. Chrysochoidis is described in his title. It will be useful for you to explain to us how you protect citizens by offering unconditional coverage to those who turn against you.
