Shortly before the announcement of the Golden Dawn trial decision, on Tuesday night, “Solidarity for All” and the artists movement “Art Attack” organized an event in Syntagma in memory of the victims of Golden Dawn, but not only .

Photographs of Pavlos Fyssas, Sahzat Lukman, Eleni Topaloudi, Jacques Costopoulos, George Floyd were placed in Syntagma Square with commemorative candles.

The actor Vangelis Varotsakis opened the event with Brecht’s verse “The name they gave us always seemed wrong to me …”, in reference to the stereotypes that pointed to the murdered.

“It is not just a candle, it is a word, an action”

On behalf of the organizing committee, Eleni Karasavvidou, thanking the citizens who supported a candle in the Constitution “against organized violence of the extreme right,” explained the symbolism of the movement. “It is not just a candle, it is a word, an action, a ‘stop’, a ‘beginning’, a dream that every citizen will fulfill when circumstances require against fascism.”

From Tsagarada, Tania Tsanaklidou went online with the event and recited an excerpt from a text by Manolis Anagnostakis. “I wish that truth and light bathe tomorrow, which is very important for Greece in the post-colonial period. It is a historic day. “I am far away, but my heart is always there,” Ms. Tsanaklidou said, addressing the approximately 100 citizens who had gathered.

Artists from Paris, Crete and Thessaloniki were connected. From the United States, Nikos Markopoulos read Maya Angelou’s poetry as a tribute to George Floyd.

With the permission of Magda Fyssa, the event was dedicated to the memory of her son Pavlos.

“He changed the world, he needs it. […] Only reality can teach us how to change reality ”, the actor Vangelis Varotsakis closed the night, again with Brecht’s poetry, recalling the appointment for the meeting at the Court of Appeal.
