But we also had a very frank discussion about the need to analyze all our relations with Turkey. “And so now we want to ask for a constructive agenda with Turkey, provided that efforts to reduce tensions continue, as has been the trend in sight of some stocks in recent weeks. ”

At the same time, Merkel stressed that the Brussels-Ankara relationship is complex and stressed that the EU shows great interest in developing a truly constructive relationship with Turkey, despite all the difficulties. “We are partners in NATO and we depend on each other in terms of immigration tactics and the support we provide to Turkey to deal with the many refugee flows that it is committed to managing,” said the German chancellor.
Regarding her expectations for the EU-Turkey relationship, Angela Merkel stressed: “We hope that this will give new impetus to the negotiations with Turkey, on the one hand, the discussion of bilateral issues relating to Greece and Cyprus, but on the other hand issues which refer to the European Union and Turkey, for example, cooperation for refugees or cooperation in a customs union. Of course, we will continue this process and record the results at the December Council meeting at the latest ” .
