Earthquake NOW: A strong earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale occurred at noon on Thursday near Nisyros, as measured by the Geodynamic Institute.

The focal depth is 114 km. The earthquake occurred in the maritime zone between the islands of Kos and Astypalea, at 2:05 p.m.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake had its epicenter 23 km southwest of the Kefalos area in Kos and a focal depth of 150 km with the initial estimate placing it at 4.9 Richter.

Nisyros is an island in the South Aegean and one in the Dodecanese. It belongs to the group of ancient Southern Sporades and is located northwest of Rhodes, between Kos, Tilos and Astypalea.

The second estimate gives the earthquake at 5.2 Richter.
