“A celebration beyond borders and languages”, as the Prime Minister described it, was tonight’s presentation ceremony for the new illumination of the Acropolis.

The timeless symbol of culture and democracy “embraced by the light of the 21st century”, as Kyriakos Mitsotakis characteristically noted, sends important messages of unity, strength and determination around the world.

The work to improve the lighting in the Holy Rock was carried out, in the presence of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni.

Under the almost full moon, the Rock, the Walls, the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, the Theater of Dionysus, the Stoa of Eumenes and the Dionysian Shrine are illuminated again, while five more monuments Gaining “shine” for the first time: the Thrasyllos monument, the Columns of the Sponsors, the Asclepieion and the caves of Apollo and Aglavros / Hourglass, as well as the Sanctuary of Aphrodite.

For the first time, the lighting distinguishes the monuments of the Holy Rock both from the walls and between them, highlighting their totality, but also the volume and geometry of each monument from all possible points of view. The marbles, whiter than ever, reflect every aspect, every geometric shape, every natural material, emphasizing the relief of the decoration of each monument.

The lighting study of the world heritage monument, carried out by the lighting designer Eleftheria Deko, was not limited to the aesthetic part, but includes the significant improvement of the existing infrastructure with the modernization of the electrical installation and the automation system and control of the luminaires.
