The permanent mooring of the warship USS Hershel “Woody” Williams in Souda was announced by Mike Pompeo at noon on Tuesday 29/9 during his visit to the US military base in Crete. “The USS Hershel Williams will arrive in Souda and it is a strategic position of perfect choice and symbolizes that our relationship is strengthening,” said the US Secretary of State during joint statements with Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The beastly 230 meter long ship (with a four-point flight deck with a total area of 4,830 square meters) had arrived in Crete on August 18 and made its way to the Souda naval base where, with the help of tugboats , docked at a place that will become your permanent location for a long time to come.

“This is a great ship!” It was then in the comment of the American ambassador, Jeffrey Payat, on Twitter about the arrival of the American USS Hershel “Woody” Williams to Souda.

The helicopter is the second in a new class of floating bases. Its crew is made up of military and civilian personnel and carries a hangar, a mission platform and work and living areas for hundreds of passengers.

In particular, it has a spacious heliport for four MH-53 and CV-22 aircraft, accommodation and training areas for marine expeditionary forces, laboratory areas and large storage areas. Alternatively or in combination, it can host command and communications centers with satellite workstations and communications, deploy unmanned aerial vehicles, amphibious units with floating vessels, and mine warfare equipment.

Ships of this class, unlike aircraft carriers, are not designed for front line operations, but are intended to reduce the dependence of US forces on port facilities or increase the capabilities of existing facilities.

The USS Hershel Williams began its journey from Virginia on July 27, 2020 after its launch in March, when it joined the US Navy. The ship, which belongs to the 60th Fleet, was named after Marine Hershel “Woody” Williams, who in America is famous for the heroism he displayed at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, for which he received a medal from President Truman on October 5, 1945.

Hershel “Woody” Williams is now 96 years old (born October 2, 1923 in West Virginia, USA) and the last survivor of a Medal of Honor from the Pacific Opera House Theater during World War II.
