Coronavirus – All news: In preparation, surveillance and compliance with personal protection measures to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, in order to avoid the “red alert” and the difficult path of “confinement” calls everyone, speaking with APE -MPE, the Rector of EKPA Thanos Dimopoulos.
It places special emphasis on educating and informing citizens, so that the observance of protective measures becomes a habit and part of the daily routine.
“The epidemiological picture of COVID-19 infection in recent days in our country is especially worrying, especially in areas where there is a marked outbreak of cases, such as Attica. To avoid the “red alarm” We must all, without exception, adapt our day to day to new conditions and, with a sense of individual and social responsibility, observe the measures to prevent the transmission of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus ”.
Mr. Dimopoulos explains that “a further increase in new daily cases combined with an increase in intubated patients will lead to new and more stringent measures. These may consist of restrictions on daily movement, Regarding geographical and time limitations, the mandatory use of the mask in all indoor and outdoor areas, especially in areas where there is a particularly high influx of cases and intubations, such as Attica. Taking the measures is determined by the respective epidemiological course of the COVID-19 infection in each area separately ”.
The “lock” is not an “easy way”
Regarding the possibility of leading to a new “blockade”, Mr. Dimopoulos points out to APE-MPE that the “blockade” is a horizontal measure with multiple socio-economic consequences in the short and long term. Therefore, it can be described as anything but an “easy trail”. Adherence to personal protection measures is challenging, especially considering that it must be done in the long term. Therefore, it is clear that the real challenge is educating citizens, so that the observance of protective measures becomes a habit and part of the daily routine. The constant information of the public is necessary with the use of all the media and by all the organisms, scientists, politicians, people of the spectacle. The education of the youngest, children and young people, through school and university is fundamental. “
It will take a few months for a vaccine to become widely available.
According to APE-MPE’s Mr. Dimopoulos, global research efforts for the development of a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 are intense and the international community looks forward to positive results from ongoing clinical trials. The safety of 27 vaccines in humans is evaluated in small phase 1 studies.
Fourteen They are in phase 2 studies with more volunteers and their efficacy and safety are being evaluated.
Eleven vaccines are under evaluation in large phase 3 studies that, if they have encouraging efficacy and safety results, will lead to regulatory approval.
“The first clear results regarding the safety and efficacy of the vaccines from the current phase 3 clinical trials are expected to be announced in January 2021, however it will take a few months for a vaccine to become widely available,” said Dimopoulos .
Coronavirus and influenza
“The synergy of seasonal flu with the coronavirus raises concern, mainly in regards to the increased demand for health services in combination with the reserves of the national health system,” says Mr. Dimopoulos. However, he emphasizes that “if the personal hygiene and physical removal measures are observed, in combination with the other measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus that will be taken on a case-by-case basis, it is very likely that we will have fewer cases of flu this year. In the southern hemisphere, and particularly in Australia, New Zealand, and South America, Low activity of seasonal flu has been observed. We hope that a similar epidemiological picture will be observed in the northern hemisphere. In each case, we have taken advantage of it, despite obstacles we can hardly imagine. “
