Timothy Ray Brown, the American who became known as “the Berlin patient”, the first person in the world to be cured of HIV, is in the last stage of cancer, announced his partner.
“Timothy is not dying of HIV, let’s be clear,” said activist and author Mark King Hefgen, who wrote on his blog that the couple wanted the news to spread through him. “HIV is no longer detected in your blood after it has been cured. Left. Now, the leukemia came.” God, I hate cancer, “Hefgen added.
Mark King said he spoke to both men last Saturday. Timothy Ray Brown is receiving treatment at his home in Palm Springs, California.
“I’ll keep fighting until I can’t fight anymore,” the patient told King over the phone.

Timothy Ray Brown made history in medical journals as the first patient to be cured of HIV. He was living in Berlin in 1995 when he learned that he was a carrier of the virus. In 2006 he was diagnosed with leukemia. To treat him for leukemia, his doctor at Berlin University Hospital performed a stem cell transplant from a donor who carried a rare genetic mutation that made him resistant to HIV.
It took two transplants, difficult and dangerous surgeries, but Timothy won the bet: In 2008 it was announced that he had been cured of both diseases. Initially, his name was not made public and he became known as “the Berlin patient”.
In 2010 he agreed to reveal his identity and has since become a public figure, giving interviews and speaking at conferences.

After Timothy, only one person was cured of HIV by the same method and is known as “the London patient.”
