ICUs suffocate in Attica: a respite before the new measures

At the same time, the battle of the scientific and health authorities of our country to control the coronavirus epidemic in the country, mainly in Attica, and ensure the hospitalization of patients in the health system is in full swing.

The situation, especially in Attica, is more than worrying, mainly because, as specialists in infectious diseases point out, the number of people in the ICU has doubled in September, reaching… April levels.

Yesterday, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced 358 other incidents of which 194 were located in Attica, which according to scientists is about to alarm and take new measures. And in the basin the number of cases has stabilized at a high level, about 200 per day, giving the specific region the first negative nationally in terms of the size of the coronavirus spread, and with a great distance from the other areas. For example, Thessaloniki now records a small number of positive cases. It was 10 o’clock yesterday, having now faced the strong wave of last August.

The above figures lead the government to prepare every detail for new measurements in case of further deterioration of the data.

“We have prepared an action plan, that we will implement based on the cases we see. So far we have achieved this in Athens and we have 107 multifunctional ICU beds for patients with COVID. These 107 in a week we can make them 150, activating and converting some other multifunctional unit beds “, Professor of Pulmonology and Intensive Care and member of the expert committee of the Ministry of Health, Anastasia Kotanidou, told ANT1.

And I add: “At this moment I can say with great pride that Greek intensive care units have better survival than several other countries like the United States, the United Kingdom and even Italy.”

“In the first wave we succeeded and we had a mortality of 30 to 40%, while in some states in the United States it reached 80 and 90%. In fact, right now we have even more rapid transfer of patients in ICU and this is very optimistic. That is why we believe that these 150 beds that we can have immediately available are enough to cover all needs “Ms. Kotanidou stressed.

The explosion in the ICU

The coverage rate for ICU beds has skyrocketed in September. Based on available data, on September 1, 43 ICU beds were occupied of patients with Covid-19 infection, with the number of beds, and therefore patients, have gone up to 85 today.

The duplication of patients in the ICU demonstrates the severity of the epidemic wave that causes serious illnesses in vulnerable and vulnerable groups of the population, however it also shows the pressure that the health system is receiving.

The Ministry of Health has implemented a plan according to which the ICU beds due to coronavirus are increased depending on the needs. Of the total number of ICU beds, the beds for coronavirus are blocked, while the number of surgeries for which intensive care is needed is reduced.

According to data from the Hellenic Society for Intensive Care, there are 337 ICU beds available in Attica in state and military hospitals. Of these, 107 have been allocated to the needs of patients with COVID-19, while in the coming days another 42 will be added to the NSS Hospitals.

the 30% of ICU beds in Attica they are free to sell, in particular 40% free of ICU-COVID beds, informs the scientific company.

Faced with the difficult autumn-winter that is coming due to the coronavirus and the comorbidity with seasonal flu, the Ministry of Health implements a broader plan to strengthen ICUs, using donations. As Deputy Health Minister Vassilis Kontozamanis said during the coronavirus briefing the day before yesterday, 22 ICU beds will be added at the end of September, another 67 in October and another 41 in November.

At the same time, donations are being made that are expected to give additional space in the ICU field. These are 50 ICU beds at the Sotiria Hospital, a donation in Nice, 155 ICUs and 19 MAFs donated by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and, as announced by the Undersecretary, there are 75 additional ICU beds and nine MAF beds (Care Units Enhanced) in Hospitals already operating in the country, which are also equipment and equipment renewal through NSRF programs.

The 7 elements that caused alarm in Attica

Yesterday, Professor Nikos Sypsas, in an almost dramatic tone, said on ANT1 television that “we must all realize that we are in a very difficult phase in Attica. “Apart from the state, citizens must do what they have to do.” The professor began to list the reasons why the situation is very bad, emphasizing that “all the quality elements of the epidemic are bad”, listing the following:

  • increase in cases
  • deceased
  • Hospital admissions
  • intubation
  • ICU bed coverage
  • percentage of samples testing positive
