In both Greece and Cyprus, Recep Tayyip Erdogan denied responsibility for the disagreements in the Eastern Mediterranean during his communication with the head of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, according to the English version of the Turkish daily Sabah.
According to the article, Erdogan said that at the heart of the tensions in the eastern Mediterranean are the “maximalist” claims of Greece and Cyprus, as well as the fact that “Turkish Cypriots are ignored.”
According to the report, Erdogan told Der Layen that Turkey had supported the dialogue from the beginning and was ready for exploratory contacts with Greece, and said that he hoped that Greece would not again squander this opportunity for diplomacy.
Erdogan noted that the renewal of the March 18 agreement between Turkey and the EU, as well as the renewal of the Customs Union and the visa waiver, could be a solid basis for strengthening relations.
Finally, reiterating that a simple burden-sharing on immigration is needed, Erdogan said the EU must investigate “the violations committed by Greece and FRONTEX.”
