Meteorologist Giannis Kallianos spoke about intense phenomena in places in the Ionian Sea and in the western part of the country since Wednesday night. An emergency bulletin on hazardous weather events was previously issued.

The phenomena at times can be intense, but not as intense as in the previous days with bad weather “Ianos”, as he said, but these areas are already overwhelmed.

From Wednesday night, in the areas of Lefkada and further south in the Ionian, but also in Epirus, western Sterea and central-western Thessaly, there will be rain along with strong winds.

According to the emergency weather forecast bulletin issued today by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the heavy rains and thunderstorms that are already occurring today Wednesday (09-23-2020) in the north of the Ionian, will continue the rest of the day and will be temporarily accompanied by strong winds and possibly hail.

The intense phenomena will affect until the afternoon and Epirus, while in the afternoon they will gradually spread towards the southern Ionian.

At the same time, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection warns citizens to be very careful, taking measures to protect themselves from the risks derived from the occurrence of severe weather events.

In particular, in areas where heavy rains, thunderstorms, or hurricane-force winds are forecast:
• Secure items that, if swept away by severe weather, could cause damage or injury.

• Make sure gutters and gutters in houses are not blocked and are working normally.

• Avoid crossing streams and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rain, but also for several hours after the end of your event.

• Avoid field work and activities in the sea and coastal areas during severe weather (risk of lightning strikes).

• Take immediate precautions during a hail storm. Take cover in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until you are sure the storm is over. Hail can also be very dangerous for animals.

• Avoid walking under large trees, under hanging signs, and generally in areas where light objects (eg flowerpots, broken glass, etc.) can break loose and fall to the ground (eg under balconies). ).
