What does Google say about this decision?
Google has announced that users under the age of 18 in Europe will now need to provide additional proof of age when requesting access to child-friendly content on YouTube. If Google systems cannot verify that the user is over 18 years of age, they will be asked to use an ID or credit card as proof.
The company said it continues its efforts to provide YouTube users age-appropriate experiences and that its initiative, which will be rolled out in the coming months, also respects upcoming regulations, such as the European EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive. (AVMSD).
From now on, in case of exposure to age-restricted content, YouTube users will need to log into their account and be 18 years or older to view it. Otherwise, a warning will appear guiding them to make the right decisions based on their age.
Google also announced that it will continue its efforts by using artificial intelligence (machine learning), so that age restrictions are applied automatically. Content creators will be able to appeal a decision that they believe the company implemented incorrectly.
Users attempting to access age-restricted videos on third-party sites will be redirected to YouTube, where they must be logged in and 18 years or older to view them. This is meant to be accessible only to the right audience, regardless of where the video is located.
