An asteroid, fortunately small, will pass unusually close to Earth tomorrow, Thursday, September 24.
This is “2020 SW” that is five to ten meters long and will approach our planet at a distance of 27,000 to 28.00 kilometers, much closer than the moon.
However, there is no danger of it falling to Earth, according to scientists from the Center for Near Earth Studies (JNE) of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (CNEOS).
The Moon is at an average distance of 384,000 kilometers from Earth (or about 30 times the size of our planet) and, comparatively, the asteroid, which was only discovered on September 18 by an Arizona observatory, will travel about twice as far as Earth, even closer than many weather satellites and other geostatic satellites are moving.
The imminent “2020 SW” approach to Earth – at a speed of about 28,000 kilometers per hour, possibly over Australia or New Zealand – will take place tomorrow at 14:00 Greek time and will have an impact on the asteroid, as its gravity Our planet will change its orbit. It is not expected to come close to Earth again before June 2029, according to JPL calculations.
The asteroid, which completes a full orbit around the Sun every 372 days (its “year” is a few days longer than Earth), will get brighter as it gets closer to Earth, but will never be visible to the naked eye. It will take at least a small six to eight inch diameter telescope to observe it, and the asteroid, moving toward the constellation Pisces, will look like a very slowly moving star.
