Ellen DeGeneres kicked off the new season of her popular talk show today by apologizing to her co-workers following reports of a toxic work environment on her set, and said changes had been made to start a “new chapter.”
The top three producers of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” have left the show, production company Warner Bros. announced in August, following an internal investigation into allegations of harassment, racism and sexual misconduct.
“I learned that things happened here that should never have happened,” de Jenneris, 62, said in a monologue at her show’s season 18 premiere.
“I take this very seriously and I want to say that I am very sorry for the people who were affected.”
“We have made the necessary changes and today we are starting a new chapter,” he added.
Over the summer, weeks of background turmoil undermined the show’s public message of goodness and happiness.
Allegations of a hostile work environment included criticism that DeGeneres was a malicious person. All this led to a campaign on social networks in which users demanded her replacement but also public statements of support for actress Kate Perry, Alec Baldwin and Aston Kutcher.
DeGeneres, who is gay, joked that she is a good actress because she has played heterosexual women. “But I don’t think I’m good enough to come here every day for 17 years and make fun of you,” she said, referring to her reputation for courtesy.
“I am the person you see on television.” “I am also many other things. Sometimes I feel sad, crazy, anxious, indignant, impatient. And I work on all this,” he concluded.
