A man was arrested in northern India after ripping his pregnant wife’s stomach with a scythe, seriously injuring her and losing her pregnant child, police and family members said.
The unfortunate woman is being treated in an intensive care unit at a hospital in the capital New Delhi, police in Boudown, Uttar Pradesh, said after Saturday’s attack.
Her brother said the attack was committed because her husband wanted to know the sex of the child. The couple already have four daughters.
“He attacked her with a scythe and tore her stomach, saying that he wanted to control the sex of the fetus,” the victim’s brother, Gulu Singh, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Daughters are often treated as a burden in India, and families have to pay a dowry when they marry, while sons are considered “bearers” who inherit property and keep the surname.
