The resignation letter from the Hellenic Cinema Center Board

“The members of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Film Center (EKK) present our resignation, since the conditions created for the Special Program of the Ministry of Culture for the Strengthening of the Cinematographic Community make the subsequent functioning of the Board impossible, of the one of which we are members “, mentions, among other things, the letter of resignation from Panos Loukakos to the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni.

The letter

Honorable Minister,

The members of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Cinema Center present our resignation, since the conditions that have been created for the Special Program of the Ministry of Culture for the Support of the Cinematographic Community make the subsequent functioning of the Board impossible, of which we are members. As an indication, we point out the constant defamatory and insulting attacks that we have received from filmmakers’ unions but also from individuals on the ground, their appeals to national and international authorities, their statements about massive appeals to Justice, the misery they publish in internet, Submissive publications on websites and newspapers, etc.

At the same time, we remind you that with the current legal framework and its multiple bureaucratic compromises and entanglements, as well as its internal shortcomings, the Hellenic Cinema Center cannot function effectively and successfully, especially in the face of a 1,400 application program, which in a month he had to process when he manages with difficulty about 300 proposals a year and those with delays. And this with the large additional contact and direct communication problems created by the pandemic and the lockdown. So far, we have done everything possible to complete the Special Program, despite its enormous difficulties. But we didn’t find any response from the filmmakers themselves. On the contrary, the constant attacks and moral and offensive threats against us have invalidated these efforts.

Finally, with his opinion of 09/21/2020, the Legal Counsel of the EKK made it clear and warned the members of the Board that in the Special Program and the new second phase announced by the Ministry of Culture, there are evident illegal procedures and flagrant violations. the principle of equal treatment and fair competition, which could lead to a repressive control of funding by the Court of Auditors, as well as a review of the legitimacy and conclusion.

In these circumstances, resignation is now a one-way street for Board members, as well as our refusal to approve the disbursement by the EKK of not even one euro of funding provided by the Ministry of Culture, to not create problems that will eventually be decided. courts, but after many years of suffering from everyone involved. Wishing you much success in your work, thank you for our cooperation so far.

With honor

Board members

Panos Loukakos, Christina Manolopoulou, Costas Ferris, Mirella Papaikonomou, Chrysanthi Sotiropoulou, Nikos Megrelis, Konstantis Frangopoulos
